Independent medical evaluations
What is an independent medical evaluation (IME)?
An IME is an assessment conducted by an impartial and objective medical expert to determine an individual’s health status. These assessments are often requested by third parties, such as companies, public organizations, insurers, consultants, unions, lawyers, or during legal disputes. A qualified medical expert, who is a member in good standing of the Collège des médecins du Québec and recognized for his expertise, will produce an independent and neutral expert report. This report will clearly and accurately address the questions outlined in the mandate, whether it pertains to a work-related injury (CNESST), a disability (physical and/or psychological), or a medical legal dispute.

What is the independent medical evaluation (IME) process?
Before the appointment date, the medical expert receives a mandate for the assessment along with a medical file from the requester. The expert reviews the mandate and examines the medical file, which typically includes sick leave certificates, medical reports, and results from additional tests such as MRIs and X-rays.
On the day of the assessment, the individual being evaluated signs a consent form to proceed. The medical expert explains their role in the process. They usually start by asking questions about the individual's health history and details related to the current claim. Following this, a thorough clinical examination is conducted to assess the person’s physical and/or mental health. Unlike a typical medical appointment, the medical expert takes extra time to ensure that all relevant facts are gathered and that a comprehensive clinical examination is performed.
Once the examination is complete, the medical expert prepares an assessment report, making sure to address the questions outlined in the mandate. This report is then sent to the party who requested the assessment.
